Bloom’s Taxonomy: Sample Task Prompts and Digital Tools	A listing of Bloom's classification for prompting and measuring cognitive tasks such as Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, etc. This list goes one better by associating digital tools to each task.

Expression Web HTML editor taking the place of FrontPage MS Office 2007	Attached is the form that is needed for faculty (or other staff) wanting to purchase a copy of Expression Web and or MS Office 2007. Wikis

The name of wikis comes from a Hawaiian word for quick. A wiki is a quickly built webpage that best serves collaborative activities. It's easy to edit and posting are made quickly. All participants can make edits regardless of their location. All that is required is internet access and a browser. All communication takes place on the wiki. Communication tools are discussion, postings, to do lists, member profiles, and page histories that track what member made what edit at what time and on what day. Podcasting

DEFINITION - audio recording made using a digital voice recorder.
EXAMPLES - AMA series with Michealann Allen ; Accounting with Pat Bouker
ACCESS - Recorders are available for check out from the Library.
HOW TO USE - audio files created using a digital voice recorder can be formated as an mp3 making it convenient for downloading to mp3 players such as ipods. This makes the audio file readily portable and easy to listen to while doing other things.
WHEN TO USE - Using podcasts allows for:
-helping students feel closer to the instructor by hearing the instructors voice.
-podcasts provide an audio file that appeals to different learning styles (see VARK learning styles)
-podcasts formatted as mp3 allow the student to walk away from the computer and still be able to access your materials while doing other activities such as walking, working out, driving, etc by using their mp3 player.
FILE MANAGEMENT
WAV size ~6000 KB per minute- this is the file that is produced by the digital recorder.
WMA size ~250 KB per minute - this file is produced when you import the above WAV file into iTunes. As a WMA the file is now editable by Audacity (the editing software) Windows Media file and not available to all.
MP3 file size is ~305 KB per minute of recording. - this file is produced unedited through iTunes or you can edit it in Audacity and save it in Audacity as an mp3. It is also more universal for listening. Transfers to more gadgets.
FILE STORAGE - SCCD has a server made especially to hold your podcasts. To use the server, you must first contact them to set up an account. Once you have the account credentials (login and password) you can post your podcasts to the server and then link to that address in your virtual classroom. Use Jean Kent's short videos to show you the procedure for getting an account on the podcast server as well as for uploading your podcasts to the server.

Second Life

Second Life is a gaming program. It is currently being explored for it's value and usefulness in education. SBSCTC's Cable Green has made it possible for community colleges to explore this idea in greater depth. He has overseen the purchase of an island in Second Life called Evergreen Island and has stimulated the organization of instructional opportunities for interested parties to attend. It's recommended that we go into Second Life, create avatars and explore the island. Already things of interest are being built and created. Founding premise was to create modules of information - each created by a specialist, then the modules are combined and made available to all via Connexion.

Accuracy and credibility of posted materials is obtained through lenses that act as filters. These lenses come in the form of endorsements made by peers, educational institutions, etc.

Collaborative Statistics - a 600 pp. math text that is open source. Featured on the front page of Connexion website.

Authors report that they get approximately 20 emails per week from people who've seen their book on Connexion and are asking questions.
Authors also note that another faculty rep from a different school has used their text and submitted to Connexion improvements/useful modifications following the Creative Commons user agreement, thus making the combined text even more thorough and of greater benefit to the public.
- In this way the learning becomes better.
- The focus of the educational resource switches to that of people working together to create a project vs that of a single author or publisher seeking to make a profit.
- This is more in line with the Web 2.0 learning environment where materials are available online
This approach also results in the development of shared materials between the members of the consortium.
Faculty developing an open textbook can/will be featured on the Connexion website.

Having open educational resources available online we can more easily customize our delivery of info to accommodate different learning styles thanks to the technology.
Open education resources through Connexion puts learning materials online and aligns with the learning style "Just in Time Learning". This is where the savvy student has learned how to find and critically evaluate information rapidly online on an as-needed basis vs. the "just in case" learning style we've been using that requires the student to absorb a glut of information in preparation for the time when a piece of info may be needed.

Theory: The founding premise mentioned above is (again) based on the idea that specialists create modules of information and make them available to all in the consortium (CCCOER).
Application: Specific to NSCC who is looking to build online orientations to computer literacy:
NeLSC produces the training modules specific to the training (computer basics) that we give to students.
Library produces training modules specific to internet research and computer literacy
IT or someone produces modules on user ethics, responsibility, campus procedures, etc.
Then the materials combined become a 2-3 credit course for students that is built within a reasonable and useful time frame. These modules can be loaded onto Connexions for use following the creative commons licensing criteria as specified by determined by the contributors.We could further the benefit by perusing Connexions for materials created at other schools such as Pierce and incorporating them into our 'course'.

As you can read in the message thread I have compiled below, we have been in conversations with Western Governors University (WGU) about a Memorandum of Understanding which would provide our graduating students with a tuition break and possible scholarships for continuing their online education at WGU (in very specific areas).
Bob Rustad in their Partnership Program first contacted President LaFayette at a League Conference (first message at bottom). Then VP Mary Ellen O’Keeffe and I followed up. As I describe below, in meeting with WGU’s Vice President of Strategic Relations (Ken Sorber), I was very impressed with the instructional quality, competency-based convenience of earning credit, and the high level of individual student support built into WGU’s programs (accredited by NWCCU). I believe this is a win/win/win situation for both institutions and our students.

SBCTC - State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.

Cable Green, A recently hired director of eLearning has prompted some significant advancements and coordination for eLearning at the state level which has impact at the college level. See 2 of Cable's blogs under the Technology page heading of 'Theory and Controversy'.

SBCTC Technology Strategic Plan - This plan has been presented to the college presidents and is the foundation for future direction of eLearning and technologies at the state level.

SBCTC has chosen a new courseware- Angel -and is working to support its voluntary implementation across the state. One goal has been to offer students and PT faculty greater ease with consistency. Another goal to offer colleges financial assistance with licensing and training.
The process for choosing a courseware involved a sub-committee of the eLearning Council that was formed by representatives from the various colleges across the state. Over the course of 2 years, this sub-committee evaluated various courseware and reported back to the eLearning Council at their quarterly meetings. The determination to go with Angel was made in Spring 2008.

FrontPage html editing software is no longer supported by Microsoft. In addition, NSCC is no longer able to distribute the FP editing software to faculty for loading onto their home computers. We can recommend Expression Web, a Microsoft product for editing html. However, please note while it is similar to Frontpage in some ways, it is also more 'robust' in its capabilites.

Microsoft Media Employee Purchase Process

Because North Seattle Community College uses MS Office 2007 and MS Expression Web, Microsoft Corporation allows NSCC employees to purchase copies of MS Office 2007 and MS Expression Web for use on their home computers. IT Services is making this media available through the Cashier’s Office. Eligible employees must:
1. Be full or part time employees in the following classifications: AA, AB, AC, AE, AH, AK, and
2. Use computers in their daily job.

Purchasers can only by one set of media. The media can be installed twice.

The cost for both MS Office 2007 and MS Expression Web is $10.00 each, plus sales tax.
To get your copy of either or both of the above media, have your supervisor fill out the form and bring it to the Cashier’s Office during business hours. Please bring photo ID.

Click here for the form that is needed for NSCC employees (faculty or staff) wanting to purchase a copy of Expression Web. It requires departmental certification.

The purchase is in essence between the employee and Microsoft through the college’s licensing agreement. The College bears no more responsibility nor liability for the installation and use of the software, than if the purchaser had bought it from Microsoft directly.
