BEST PRACTICES and PRACTICAL TIPS
Determine ahead of tine what your response time (24 hours? 48 hours?) will be to students and be sure to convey that to students in your syllabus and post it to your discussion and email forums. It helps students to maintain reasonable expectations. You can then ask them to respond with a similar time table.
Be Clear and Specific when delivering information online to students.
Re: the discussion component. You can state that (10%) of their grade will be based on their participation in the discussion forum. Then go on to be specific about what your expectations are:
Per week, how many replies to you want the student to make (participating in a thread).
Per week, how many topics do you want your student to initiate? (Begin a new thread).
Define the quality of the reply: one or two word acknowledgment earns (this many) points.
"A thoughtful, well organized post earns _______ points."
